Welcome to the Smart Startup English Podcast!

Our goal is to help startup professionals take their English from intermediate to advanced in just 10 minutes at a time. In each episode, we’ll talk about a topic related to the startup world, and we’ll learn some vocabulary that you can use to sound more natural in your day-to-day business interactions in English.

In this episode, we’re talking about startups in the edutainment niche.

But first, let me ask you this:

Are you currently using any apps to learn something new, such as a new language, or programming, or any other new skill?

If you are, then you might already be a fan of edutainment.

Edutainment is a combination of education and entertainment. Think of watching a documentary on the Discovery Channel. You’re learning new things while also being entertained by a good documentary. You’re not just learning about the topic from a boring book.

The term edutainment was coined by the Walt Disney Company way back in 1948 to describe their True-Life Adventures series.

But today, edutainment is a term used heavily in the startup world. A few startups in the language learning edutainment niche include Duolingo, Little Pim and Gus on the Go.

In addition to apps and games, the edutainment media is big business. And you probably already know that, if you’ve ever watched a TED Talk or listened to the Freakonomics podcast. These are great examples of edutainment – educating and entertaining at the same time.

In this lesson, we’ll teach you 10 Business English terms you need to know to talk about edutainment

A few words we’ll talk about are:

  • gamification
  • to cater to someone
  • drawbacks
